Changing the Odds for Children, Second Annual Dallas Conference hosted by Salesmanship Club

By: Maureen Fernandez

It’s no secret that children who experience childhood trauma or abuse have trouble learning in school.  In fact, the brains of these children are physically different than kids who have had their needs met and felt safe and secure.  Can you imagine trying to learn math facts when your brain is constantly in a state of fight, flight or freeze?  Mental health professionals and educators understand that trauma, abuse and mental illness can interrupt a child’s ability to succeed, but the path to social emotional health is not always clear.  Professionals are hungry for the most innovative and exciting solutions, and Salesmanship Club is committed to bringing together thought leaders from across the country so that as many kids as possible can get the help they need.

Salesmanship Club’s second annual Changing the Odds Conference will be held September 26-27 and will bring top researchers and scholars to Dallas to explore two characteristics that are intrinsically linked to social emotional health and long term success: perseverance and resilience.

Paul Tough, author of the bestselling book, “How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power ofCharacter,” will be giving the keynote on the morning of September 26th.  Tough challenges society’s emphasis on test scores and focuses on a new generation of research that points to “non-cognitive skills” as an indicator of lifelong success – especially in the 21st century.  Other esteemed speakers include Carol Dweck, author of “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”, Tina Payne Bryson, co-author of “The Whole Brain Child” and Robert Emmons, author of “Thanks: How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier.”

The conference is geared toward educators, mental health professionals, parents and anyone who works with children.  Come learn with us about developing social and emotional health in young people.  Come collaborate and share innovative ideas as we all seal our commitment to help all children.  Last year’s conference received rave reviews.  Join Salesmanship Club for the 2013 Changing the Odds Conference to learn more.
