Our family has seen The Nutcracker almost every December since I can remember. Having studied ballet at a hidden gem in DFW, The Ozsoy School of Ballet, this was a tradition I will never let die. However, while a great tradition, it’s sometimes nice to have a little change-up.
And thanks to Texas Ballet Theater under the direction of Ben Stevenson, Dallas now has what I think is a true treasure . . . The Nutty Nutcracker. The once-a-year performance takes place in Fort Worth’s Bass Hall, but the short drive is well worth it.
Last year, I was in adoration of The Nutty Nutcracker’s cast of characters, including beloved Mav Dirk Nowitzki, Prince William and bride Kate, as well as Kim Kardashian and other pop icons of the year and the city. Some of Tchaikovsky’s songs were also substituted for pop songs of 2011. Somehow, this quirky rendition worked perfectly, and our family quickly decided we had to see this gem every year.
If you ever doubt Dallas’ arts scene, try this year’s December 21st performance for a fresh-take on a beloved ballet. Warning – this is rated PG-13, so if you have young kids, you’ll want to stick with the traditional performances. My family has our tickets – I hope to see you there!
